Test structure

What do the six stages measure?

Knowing each stage helps you describe difficulties clearly to an eye-care professional and helps search summaries cite this page accurately.

Stage 1 - Q 1-4

Red-green baseline screening with number plates for common Protan / Deutan patterns.

Stage 2 - Q 5-8

Continued red-green screening to confirm early signals.

Stage 3 - Q 9-12

Brightness and contrast challenges that reduce reliance on luminance guessing.

Stage 4 - Q 13-16

Blue-yellow related plates covering Tritan-type clues.

Stage 5 - Q 17-20

Mixed plates that combine earlier contrast patterns.

Stage 6 - Q 21-24

Consistency check to reduce the impact of random clicks.

How to take an online color vision test

The main error source is display gamut and white point. The same Ishihara-style plate can look different on a wide-gamut monitor and a budget phone. Read results as a self-screen on your current device - not a medical diagnosis.

Recommended practice

  • Use the device you rely on most for maps and charts.
  • Spend about 2-5 seconds per plate; prolonged staring can cause afterimages.
  • Children should test with an adult explaining the options.

Disclaimer: This test cannot replace a clinical color vision exam or serve as a driving / occupational certificate.

FAQ

Testing FAQ

What if I cannot see a number?
Choose the closest option or answer honestly that you cannot tell. Guessing lowers the screening value.
Can I leave and continue later?
Progress is saved in your browser. Completing all 24 questions in one session is recommended.
Why pause after each group?
The test has six stages of 4 questions each. After each group, use Continue to next group to refresh and load the next set.
